How Adaptavist can help
Imagine your company as a ship setting sail towards a grand destination—that's your overarching goal. But to navigate successfully and reach your destination, you need a clear route (roadmap), efficient communication with your crew, and a top-of-the-range guidance system to help you chart your route.
Here's where OKRs come in:
The ship: This is your company or team, its resources (like talented engineers), capabilities (your expertise), and everyone working together.
The vision: This is the "destination" – your long-term ambition for the company. Think of it as knowing you want to reach a paradise island, but don't have a specific map or defined route yet.
The captain and officers: This is your C-level leadership team; they set the course and make major decisions about the journey. Leaders translate the vision into achievable objectives (the "what").
Objectives: (These are the "why") —specific, measurable, ambitious goals that steer your ship towards the destination. It's like deciding to sail southeast through a series of strategic channels to reach the island paradise because this route has less choppy waters.
Key results: (Think of these as checkpoints objectives) on your route: "reach the first island by day 3," "dock at the port for supplies on day 7", and even navigate around the storm forecast to the East, avoiding any damage and losses on day 17." They are the measurable milestones and planned manoeuvres you need to make along your route, proving you're making progress toward your destination.
The ship's log: (The OKR Platform) This is where all vital information is recorded and tracked, like a digital ship's log. It helps monitor your progress against each key result, showing who's responsible for what, deadlines, and any roadblocks encountered. Imagine it as a shared view where everyone can see the current status of the journey and contribute to keeping things on track.
By aligning Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) across teams, you ensure everyone is sailing in the same direction toward a shared vision. Like a well-coordinated ship, a company with clearly defined OKRs can navigate challenges, track progress effectively, and ultimately reach its destination—success!
It was all going so well…
But hang on. The ship's log has become unreliable and is being decommissioned when your ship is mid-journey, and you will need a new one. When software becomes obsolete, it can be a real challenge to find something comparable, and as with any upgrade, you need it to be even better than the old one with the newly added route data, be able to reroute if necessary, and be user-friendly for the crew because you don't want to have to take any costly diversions, lose any data or make it so difficult to use that you end up with a mutinous crew.
With Microsoft Viva Goals reaching its end of life at the end of 2025, your captain and crew now face this exact dilemma. You have no alternative but to onboard a new ship's log (OKR platform) and are also against the clock. It's time to choose a solution that empowers your leadership to make faster, data-driven decisions whilst keeping your teams aligned with strategic priorities and reporting.
We get it. The beauty of Viva Goals is that it can share and update progress toward key business objectives both upwards and downwards with percentages and a traffic light system to see at a glance if your goals are on track. The crew and first officers can easily see on a single tab where their work is contributing to these key objectives, linking key results to an objective to validate that the work under the objective is actually delivering the expected benefits.
For example:
Objective: improve the ship's culture. The key result is that eNPS achieves a score of xx by January 2026.
However, all is not lost
You chose Microsoft Viva Goals for a reason in the past, but the available options have changed in terms of availability and functionality. The good news is that the functionality you rely on in Viva goals is also now available in other platforms. Now is a good time to reassess your options based on what is now available.
So, what are your options? The rest of this blog explores the benefits of migrating to a new, powerful alternative OKR software solution, giving you the insights you need to make the right choice for your organisation.
