I'm testing Bubbles for a new confluence instance and one of things I'm trying to do is add a widget to a portal used as some sort of user profile with information about people in my company. But testing search functionality with a unique word (just some plain text) inside a widget and trying to search for that word, did not return any pages. Does this indeed mean that content on a portal is not indexed and retrievable, or am I missing something?

That is correct the contents of a widget are not included in the search index. This is also the case with user macros defined in Confluence. The main problem I can see with adding this information to the index is that the content that can be displayed in a widget can depend on the user viewing it, thus you don't have static content to include in the index.
