Custom Text Field Encryption

Encryption for Jira allows you to encrypt both single line and multi-line custom text fields. To create a new encrypted custom field, complete the following steps:

  1. Select Issues from the Jira Administration menu.
  2. Click Custom Fields under Fields in the left sidebar.
  3. On the Custom Fields page, click Add Custom Field.
  4. Select either Encrypted Text Field (multi-line) or Encrypted Text Field (single line) then click Next.
  5. Type a name and an optional description for the new field then click Create.
  6. Select the screens to which you want to associate the new field then click Update.  You must associate a field to a screen before it will be displayed.

Once created, the value of the text field will be encrypted within the Jira Database.

Filtering Encrypted Custom Fields

By default, encrypted custom fields have the Encrypted Text Field Searcher template. Users can search for texts in the same way as they do with Jira's native custom text fields.

Warning

To be able to index the fields, Lucene stores the decrypted values. Therefore, a user with access to the file system could access the Lucene indexes and see the values of the fields.

If required, you can unlink the field from the searcher by editing the field and selecting None from the Search Template drop-down.

Lucene will not store any decrypted value, and users will be able to search by this custom field in a filter.
