Encrypting Attachments after the configuration

When getting started, we recommend that you encrypt all attachments in your JIRA instance.

After generating and saving your keys, a message asks you to encrypt all your existing attachments. If you click "Encrypt now", a process will be launched in the background to encrypt all attachments.

If you select "Encrypt later", no attachments will be encrypted until you go to the configuration page and apply a security scheme.

The outcome of Encryption is that the attachments will no longer be readable by accessing them directly from the server file system.

Configuring the Security Scheme

Default behavior

By default, all attachments will be encrypted. So if this is your desired behaviour just disable the Security Schemes button.

This way, all existing attachments and the new ones will be encrypted.

The Project Level Encryption for Attachments menu can be found under Add-ons → ENCRYPTION FOR JIRA → Configuration.

Select the encrypted projects

If you want to select only specific project attachments to be encrypted, please enable the Security Schemes button and select the wanted projects.

The selection can be done in a basic way using the box above the "Save" button, or in an advanced way clicking on the button.

Decrypt all

If you need to decrypt all your attachments for all projects:

  1. Turn on the "Enable / Disable Security Schemes" button
  2. Unselect all projects
  3. Click on the "Save" button

The outcome of Decryption is that the attachments will be again readable by accessing them directly from the server file system.
