There are two ways to create a Community. You can convert a currently existing space, or create a brand new space.

Before a new community can be created a site administrator must setup an initial Community Type.

Creating a New Community Space

To create a new community you must have create space permission within Confluence. You will first need to create a link to the create community Confluence action with the Create Community Macro.

Site administrators can also click on the create link directly from the Community Types administration screen.

Create Community Step One

The first step in creating a new community lets you specify the basic options for your new community. Everything except for selecting community type corresponds exactly the options that you would enter when creating a new non community space.

Create Community Step Two

The second screen in the create community process lets you select the initial Permission Scheme that will apply to the Community.

This screen will also confirm the options that were specified on the previous screen.

Click on the Create button to create the new community. You will then be taken to the homepage of the new Community space.

Converting an existing space to a Community

Current spaces can be converted into a Community space. You need to have admin space permission to convert a space to a Community space. To begin converting a space click on the Convert Space to Community link under the Space Admin menu. (This link will not appear in personal spaces.)

Convert Space Step One

First you need to select the Community Type for the converted space. The community type will be used to provide the initial community settings such as theme and permissions.

The following options can also be configured as part of the conversion:

Option

Notes

Set Homepage Portal

If this option is selected and the community type has a default portal defined, the content of the space homepage will be replaced with the default portal.

Set Theme

If this option is selected the space theme will be changed to match the theme defined in the Community Type settings

Set Permissions

If this option is selected the space permissions defined on the Permission Scheme (selected on the next screen) will be applied to the space. These permissions will not replace the current permissions on the space.

Click the Next button to go to the next conversion step.

Convert Space Step Two

The second screen in the convert community process lets you select the Permission Scheme that will apply to the converted community. If the Set Permissions option was selected on the previous screen the space permissions defined in the permission scheme will be added to the current space permissions, if that option wasn't selected only the community enrolment setting from the Permission Scheme will be used.

This screen will also display a confirmation of the options selected on the previous screen.

Click the Convert button to convert the space to a Community.
