Strange Email Subjects and Email Body

Descendant Notification - Bug Report, made by Csaba Vertessy on Sep 02, 2011 14:51

Current Status: Awaiting Development

Plugin Version: 1.3.6

Confluence Version: 3.5

Hi,

we're using Notification Plugin since it was released, but we're experiencing an interesting issue since we upgraded to the newest version: the structure of the email's subject does not fit the body of the email. For example: the subject says, that the email comes from 'xSpace > xSite from xUser' but the body contains different information from 'ySpace > yPage and yUser'. The events

Its looks like, that the standard Confluence mailing service and the plugins service are in conflict, and mixes the notification emails' subject and body.

Let me know, if you need more information, or a system log.

Regards,
Csaba

    Gareth,

We are also using this plugin and have recently received several complaints from the users, who recieve such mixed notifications, which is very confusing.

In our case even the notification subjects contain the mixed space names.

    E.g: User is watching a Space1, there is a Page1.
He recieves a notification about a Page2 in different space (Space2) which was updated , with the Subject "[Wiki] Space2 > Space1>Page1" .
The content of the notification describes the changes on the page in Space2, which is a completely different page and is not anyhow linked to page1 or Space1.

I would like to raise a priority of this bug, since we really suffer from it.

PS: @Csaba, Thanks for identifying this problem!

    Thanks.
    Anna

    Hi Gareth,

We are experiencing the same issue. We are running version Confluence 3.4.9. We installed the Descendant Notification plugin version 1.3.6 and started experiencing this issue. We then uninstalled the 1.3.6 version and installed the 1.3.5 version. Over the weekend we did a full reboot of our server and a restart of the application hoping this would fix the issue. Do you know what version of the plugin this issue was introduced? Do you have any short-term solutions to rectify this issue?

We have a very large instance of Confluence and many of our users are experiencing this issue. I would like to see this issue to be addressed.

    Thanks Karen Mustain

No, the bulk ouf our spare time is being spent on creating Confluence 4 compatible versions of our free plugins, which is a task involving many man-months of work. However, this is at the top of my list of issues to have resolved beyond that. Thanks.

A few additional details to possibly help you identify and resolve the issue:

    • Problem started when we upgraded to Confluence 3.5 (the Plugin was already installed under 3.3).
    • Examining a few of these messages, the page in the email body was saved at about the same time as the watched page (listed in the subject).
    • Also, at least one user (who has a lot of watches) reported that he stopped receiving erroneous notices when he turned off autowatch, so that may be a factor.

Another site reported to Atlassian that they stopped receiving "rogue" notification once they disabled the Descendent Plugin, so Atlassian has marked the issue "Answered" and appears to be washing their hands of it.

I guess that leaves it up to you – either fix the problem or put pressure on Atlassian to resolve it with you.

Because right now, the default solution is to disable your plugin, and that's not a good message if you want to keep customers.

    Hi all,

Due to this bug we have decided to uninstall this plugin in our organization. That`s a pity since we`ve been using it for such a ling time by now, but random notifications have caused some security issues already.
Anyway hope it will be solved some time so we could enable it again..

      Hi Fe, All,

We are working internally on the compatibility of our plugins for 4.3, and I have raised this issue internally once more to ensure it is appropriately high on the priority list.

However, this plugin isn't one of our commercial plugins and as our focus is on paid work our developers are all busy working on commercial products and services. If however you have an urgent requirement for an expedited resolution to this issue, we can provide that as a commercial service.

If this is something you would like to pursue please let me know and I'll get a member of the sales team to contact you to discuss your requirements.

This has just confirmed that I will be uninstalling this plugin.

When earlier updates was asked for, you were working on compatibility to 4.0, 4.1, 4.2 and now 4.3. I think I can pretty much expect the issue you introduced to not be fixed as you simply won't support it. Therefore, I will have to remove the plugin.

    Thanks for the update though.

      Hi,

We have not yet been able to reproduce this problem, but would be worth to use the most recent release(3.0.2) of the plugin, because several changes have been made to the code which may affect this area, however nothing specific has been done to directly resolve this issue.

Thank you for your help identifying this issue. To be able to fix this issue, we need to reproduce it locally, to that end we could use your help in defining the steps that are required to reliably make this happen. Starting from a fresh confluence install, or a brand new space, what are the steps required to make content in that space generate invalid notifications?

    Hi Gergely

As far as I can tell (noting that this is based on observation, not test):

    1. User 1 creates or edits a page that is watched by user 2.
    2. User 3 creates or edits a page at the same time as user 1.
    3. User 2 receives a notification email that contains a mix of information regarding the pages created or edited by user 1 and user 3

Additionally, we have also noticed the following:

    1. User 1 creates or edits a page
    2. User 2 creates or edits a page at the same time
    3. User 1 receives a notification (even if they shouldn't have) that is a mix of the notifications for the pages created or edited by user 1 and user 2

    Cheers

    Maree

    Hi Gergely,

We were trying to get the definite steps to reproduce the issue, however it was rather hard to define them.
I can only say when the issue happened in our case, not sure if it can be reproduced exactly the same way for you:

    CASE: I am watching a Space1, there is a Page1.
Page2 in Space2 is updated. I am not watching either Space2 or Page 2. This spaces/pages are not linked.

    I receive a notification about an update to Page2 in Space2, with the Subject "[Wiki] Space2 > Space1>Page1" .

The content of the notification describes the changes on the page2 in Space2.
