What is SSL?
Secure Socket Layer (SSL) is a method of secure communication between two computers. It encryps data sent between a website and your computer.
SSL uses certificates (public keys digitally signed by a trusted certificate authority) to provide authentication and encryption. It's the industry-standard way of securing internet communications and causes the yellow lock (
) to appear in your browser when you view any secure web page.
SSL provides added reassurance of privacy and confirmation of security for end-users who interact with your hosted application.
SSL Options
You have one or two options depending on your type of hosting.
Free SSL using *.secure.adaptavist.com
Available to Shared Hosting and Dedicated Hosting customers.
Any customer hosting with Adaptavist can request free SSL via the whatever.secure.adaptavist.com domain name, where "whatever" is a unique host name mutually agreed between yourself and Adaptavist.
The advantage of using *.secure.adaptavist.com is that you don't need to buy your own SSL certificate - you simply use Adaptavist's certificate free of charge.
Custom SSL using your own certificate
Available only for Dedicated Hosting customers.
This option is only available to customers with a dedicated server from Adaptavist and allows SSL encryption for the custom domain name used to access the hosted applications.
Requesting SSL
To activate either form of SSL on your account, please create a new ticket in the Hosting Support area of our Customer Support Portal.
In the summary of your issue state SSL Request and your company name or the name of your website.
Please include the following information for a fast response:
- Your current domain names or host name
- Whether you are using shared or dedicated hosting
- What type of access you would like
- If you would like your own certificate
- If you need us to provide you with a certificate request for you to pass on to your certificate authority.
