Apple OS X has an easy to use tool called Network Utility that makes it trivial to quickly find problems with your connection to the server.
Use Spotlight or browse your Applications or Utilities folders to find and launch Network Utility:
Some of the more useful features are described below...
Ping
Ping lets you quickly "ping" your server to see if it's alive and kicking. For more information on using Ping, see our tutorial on Ping.
If ping is unable to reach your server, you can use Traceroute to find out where the problem lies...
Traceroute
Traceroute allows you to trace the route from your computer to your server showing each part of the journey. It's a great way to work out where a fault has occurred on the journey.
Note: See tracert if you're using Windows or traceroute if you're using Unix/Linux.
Simply enter the URL to your site and hit the Trace button and it will examine every step in the journey between your computer and your server.
For more details on what the output means and how to copy and paste it in to a support ticket, see our tutorial on traceroute - the Network Utility uses the Unix traceroute command but makes it quicker and easier to use with a nice interface.
