Domain Names

This tutorial explains how to use your host name and existing domain names...

Default Host Name

Whenever a Host account is set-up, you will be given a default "host name". This becomes active almost immediately so you can start using your account.

The default host name for Shared Hosting will be in the form:

http://yoursite.wiki-neon.adaptavist.com

For Dedicated Hosting it will be of the form

http://yoursite.dedicated.adaptavist.com

The yoursite part of the host name will be specific to your account and will be specified in the information that we send to you once your account has been set-up.

Using Existing Domain Names

Note: If your ISP manages your domain name, just send them the URL to this page. If they have any questions, they are more than welcome to chat directly to our hosting team.

This is not a request to transfer the domain name. All that is required is a minor update to change where web traffic is sent.

  1. Point the desired subdomains of your domain name to wiki-neon.adaptavist.com, preferably using a CNAME (more reliable). If you cannot use a CNAME, please set-up an A Record using the IP address obtained by manually resolving your host name to get our current IP address (see nslookup for a tutorial).
  2. Inform Adaptavist (via our Customer Support Portal) of the domain names(s) that have been pointed at our servers. Adaptavist will check that the domain name is correctly configured and make the required changes on our servers.

Do NOT redirect your email services (MX records) to our servers.

Technical Example

We reccommend that you set both the default subdomain (e.g. yoursite.com) and the www subdomain (e.g. www.yoursite.com) to point at our server as your visitors will sometimes forget to add in the www part.

There is no limit to the number of domain names or subdomains you can use to access your Host account - just use the same process for each one.

Our servers can be configured to redirect all of your domain names to one specific domain name - if you need this, please let us know.

Not able to access your site?

It can take up to 48 hours for changes to domain names to propagate throughout the entire internet so please be a little patient after updating your domain name.

If you use the same ISP for your internet connection and domain name hosting, you'll likely be able to access your site almost immediately but it might still take up to 48 hours before other people can use it.

Remember that Adaptavist need to make some changes to the server so that it recognises your domain name - have you remembered to tell our hosting team of the new domain name?

If you're still having problems, please see our troubleshooting guide: I can't get to my site

Some plugins failing or wrong links in email notifications?

Certain plugins may fail if the domain name used to access your site is different than that specified by the "Base URL" setting within your General Configuration settings.

Anonymous Access and Site Homepage

Remember that for anonymous visitors to be able to see your site, you must tick the Can Use option in [USERGUIDE:Global Permissions] and then enable at least the View permission in Space Permissions for any Spaces you want them to see. If you have a default space that you wish to use as your site home page, ensure that anonymous visitors can see it and then set it to the Site Homepage.

Once the settings are complete, people will be able to use your domain name(s) to see your sites. When they arrive at your account, they'll either see The Dashboard or the Site Homepage as per your settings.

Email Servers and MX records

MX Records control how you email is delivered. Settings these records incorrectly can cause problems with your email. Incorrect settings include using the IP address supplied by Adaptavist for your hosting package as an MX record.

To set your MX records correctly you will need to enter the IP addresses or domain name supplied by your email provider.
