A socket that automatically turns peripherals on and off when you turn your Computer (or TV or Amp, etc.) on or off...
It's got built-in surge protection (similar to most Belkin devices), but no insurance, although home or business insurance will generally cover the equipment.
I don't know about you, but I've got herds of peripherals attached to my computer and even though they all go in to standby mode when the computer is turned off, they are still drawing power. These sockets seem like a fairly unobtrusive way to cut down on stand-by power consumption.
Can you imagine if all households had at least one of these things? And can you imagine the cost savings for large office buildings? Turn off the computer and the printer, phone, speakers and monitor are properly turned off - multiply that by a few thousand PCs in your average large office block and you get quite some energy saving.
Their website states that a unit should pay for itself within 12 months based on the energy savings, but it doesn't give any indication as to how much energy was used to produce and transport the unit - it could be 36 months or more before the net energy cost starts to actually benefit the environment.
I've fired an email off to the company that makes them to see if they have more detailed information for the whole product lifecycle and also how to recycle/dispose of it.
