Threaded comments garbage in EU7 and IE8

sorry to bother again with IE issues...

Threaded comments in IE7 and IE8 look terrible, see thumbnail.
Strangely enough, it is shown normal with IE6 (and FF, of course). There is hardly any IE-specific CSS applied, only for the .atb-header and the #searchresultshadow.

It looks like the space for the collapsed comments is also used for the expanded comments.

Any thoughts where to start for a solution?
