Dev - Enrolment Models

There are four enrolment models which affect how people join and leave communities: open, moderated, closed and network.

The table below shows how the enrolment model affects a community space:

Model Who can add members? Who can remove members? Space is a...
open
(was: public)
  • Anyone can join, members can invite
  • end-users can add themselves
  • existing members can invite
  • space/site admins can invite
  • Leave at any time
  • members can leave the community
  • space/site admins can kick members
Open Community
moderated
(was: invite)
  • Must be invited or approved to join
  • end-users can request to join
  • existing members can invite new members
  • space/site admins can invite users
  • Leave at any time
  • members can leave the community
  • space/site admins can kick members
Moderated Community
closed

  • Approved invites only
  • existing members can invite new members, but space/site admin needs to approve the invitation before the end-user receives it
  • space/site admins can invite users
  • Leave at any time
  • members can leave the community
  • space/site admins can kick members
Closed Community

  • Need permission to leave
  • site admins can kick members

Current Beta

At present, we only have the open (public) and network enrolment types listed on the permission scheme settings within the current beta release.

Notes

The naming of the enrolment model has to be quite careful - it shouldn't mislead people in to thinking that it's a permission scheme (although in some respects, I guess it is). For example, the "closed" model used to be called "private" which could make people think that only members could see the community (which is not necessarily the case).

Expected Changes

It's very likely that the enrolment model will be moved out of the permission scheme and put in to the community definition as a multi-select list box, simplifying permission schemes (making them more re-usable in the process) and also making it much easier to select and later change enrolment models on community spaces.
