Space Permissions
Space Permissions allow you to define who can see, edit and admin each individual Space...
What are Space Permissions?
Each Space within your Builder account can have it's own unique set of permissions that define who can see content in the Space, who can add and delete various types of content and who can export or administrate the space.
Note:
The site admistrator has full permissions in all spaces, even if you specifically revoke permissions for the administrator in a specific space.
Why use Space Permissions?
Because your Builder account allows you to have an unlimited number of spaces, you may end up with all kinds of different uses for Builder and you'd want each one to be secured in a different way.
For example:
- A Website would generally be viewable by anyone, but only authorised people could edit or update
- An Intranet would usually be viewable by your staff and they'd also have edit Permissions
- A Wiki would generally allow anyone to view and add/edit content, but only specific people could administrate the space
- A Blog would generally be viewable by everyone with one or two people being able to add pages/news and anyone being allowed to comment
- A technical support site would likely allow any registered member to post comments and allow the support team to add pages, news and attachments
Space Permissions are the mechanism that gives you all this flexibility and, best of all, they are really easy to set up and maintain...
What Permissions are Available?
The permissions available within a space are separated in to several categories...
View
This permission defines who can see the Space. If someone can view your space, they can view all types of content within the space. This privilege is must be granted if you want to assign any additional Permissions.
As with all permissions, a
indicates the permission has been granted and a
indicates that it has been denied.
Page
These permissions are split in to several levels that define what can be done with pages:
| Privilege |
Notes |
| Create |
Can they create and edit pages? |
| Export |
Can they export pages to PDF files or Word documents, etc? |
| Restrict |
When editing a page, can they set Page Restrictions? |
| Remove |
Can they delete pages? |
News
These permissions define who can add or remove news articles (also known as "blog posts"):
It's not possible to export news items or set specific permissions for a news item. As a result, there are no "Export" and "Restrict" settings as seen on Pages.
Comment
These permissions define who can add or remove comments:
Careful consideration should be given to enabling anonymous visitors to post comments - SPAM doesn't just land in your email in-box, it can also land in comments on your website!
Attachment
These permissions define who can add or remove file attachments such as images, documents, videos, etc., to your pages and news articles:
Mail
You can include a mail archive in any space (see [USERGUIDE:Mail Archive]) and this permission defines who can remove messages from the archive:
If you enable the mail archive, then anyone who can send email to the address specified will be able to add mail to the archive. Anyone with view access to the Space will be able to see the mail archive.
Space Operations
These permissions define who can perform administrative tasks for a Space:
The Export permission allows the entire Space to be exported in various formats (such as PDF or XML) and is an ideal way to take backups.
The Admin permission allows key administrative tasks such as setting permissions, configuring the theme and mail options, etc., to be performed. It should only be given to highly trusted individuals!
