Linking to News

Linking to News

You can create links to news on your own site and news on external sites. This tutorial shows you how to link directly to news items and provides details on linking to external news sites...

Linking to Your News (Blogs)

To link to a news item, you must include the year/month/day and then the title of the item, for example:

[/2005/10/31/Demonstration News]

Which results in: [/2005/10/31/Demonstration News]

As with all links, you can customise the on-screen link text and also the tooltip:

[Some News|/2005/10/31/Demonstration News]
[Some News|/2005/10/31/Demonstration News|Just an example...]

Which results in:

[USERGUIDE:Some News]
[USERGUIDE:Some News]

Linking to a Specific Date

Because all news items are linked to a specific date, you can create links that show all news stories for a given date as follows:

[/2005/10/31]

Which results in: /2005/10/31

You can also link to news for a specific month, as shown below:

[/2005/10]

Resulting in: /2005/10

It's usually a good idea to provide descriptive link text, for example:

[News from October, 2005|/2005/10]

Resulting in: USERGUIDE:News from October, 2005

Hints and Tips

You can display news items within your Pages or include lists of news items using the [USERGUIDE:blog-posts macro]. This is ideal if you want to display your latest news on your home page.

External sites can easily link to your news articles and your site can also display news from external websites - for more information, see our tutorial on the [USERGUIDE:rss macro].

Frequently Asked Questions

Q Can I link to news on external sites?
A Yes, use the [USERGUIDE:rss macro].
Q My news links are broken even though I'm including the year/month/day and news title - any ideas?
A Make sure you haven't included any "+" symbols in your link - the URL shown when viewing the news will replace all spaces with +'s so if you copy it you should replace the +'s with spaces.

the link to the blog-post macro appears to be broken....

The News, blog-posts macro and rss macro links are all broken.

I cannot find blog-posts and rss macro documented anywhere, do these features actually exist?
