Online Help

This page explains how to get the most from this site by taking advantage of it's advanced navigation and content features...

Accessibility Features

Adaptavist are working with various standards to improve the accessibility of all websites, including our own. This section outlines the current accessibility features that can be found on this site.

Access Keys

We have recently started introducing some access keys in to our software and although there are a few glitches, we're determined to see the task through in order to make this website more accessible.

The use of access keys depends on the browser you are using and also the operating system you are using. For example, on Microsoft Windows you would use "Alt"+"S" to access the search panel.

You can see a list of access keys for each section of our website by "tabbing" in to the page - they'll appear in the top-left corner. Obviously if you've got a screen reader they'll be the first thing you'll hear

Browser Access Keys

The following table lists some of the access keys commonly found in web browsers:

Key Function Browser
AccessKey+"S" Select the search box Most browsers
AccessKey+"F" File Menu - where you can save or print a page Most browsers
AccessKey+"E" Edit Menu - where you can copy, paste and search for text Most browsers
AccessKey+"V" View Menu - where you can set text size, etc. Most browsers
AccessKey+"A" Favourites Menu - your list of favourite places on the Internet Internet Explorer
AccessKey+"B" Bookmarks Menu - your list of bookmarks All browsers except Internet Explorer
AccessKey+"T" Tools Menu - change your Internet settings, etc. Most browsers

For example, pressing "Alt"+"S" (when using Microsoft Windows) will put the cursor in the search box, ready for you to type in your search.

Should any browser access keys be overriden by site specific access keys, you can still access the menu on the web browser by pressing the access key on it's own then using the left and right arrow keys to select the desired menu and using the up and down arrow keys to select an item on that menu. For example, pressing "Alt" (when using Microsoft Windows) will set keyboard focus to the browser's menu bar. For more information on shortcut keys used on both our website's menus and also your browser menus, please see the Menus sub-section later on this page.

Navigation

We've provided numerous navigational aids to help you find your way around this site. You don't have to use them all, just those that you feel most comfortable with and find easiest to use. To help you choose which navigation features to use, we'll list all of them below and explain where to find them and how to use them.

Search

One of the quickest and easiest ways to locate information on our site is to use the search feature. Simply type what you are looking for in to the search box and click the button:

The search box appears at the top-right of every single page on this site and can be accessed using the "S" access key. After typing in your search criteria, either click the "Search" button or simply press the "Enter" or "Return" key.

If you want to perform a more specific search, take a look at our tutorial on Search Query Syntax.

Menus

The menu system that appears near the top of the page is the easiest way to quickly jump to key locations on our site. Move the mouse over the menu to display it and then click on the desired item.

When a menu is displayed, you can also use the left and right arrows to access the menus either side of it or use the up and down arrows to select options within the menu. Alternatively, you can use the mouse to highlight the desired menu or item.

After displaying a drop down menu (such as the Company menu), you can access any item on that menu by pressing the letter or number that is underlined in the item text or by clicking on it with the mouse.

Some menus contain sub-menus, as indicated by a small arrow to the right of the items containing the sub-menus. To access the sub-menu, select the item and press the right arrow key to open the sub-menu. You can also move the mouse over the item and the sub-menu will automatically appear. To close the sub menu, press the left arrow key or move the mouse over another menu item.

To close all menus, move the mouse cursor off them and they will close automatically, or press the "Escape" key and they will close immediately.

Breadcrumb Trail

The breadcrumb trail appears near the top of the page - it shows you where you are within the site's structure.

Just click any of the links to jump to the associated place on the site.

Navigation Pages

There are several dedicated navigation pages (some of which we'll explain later on this page), all of which are accessed from the View menu:

There are currently no access keys to jump to the navigation pages, however you can jump to the menu with AccesKey+H and then use the cursor keys to navigate to various menu options.

Site Map

The site map is useful if you want to explore the site structure. Click the + or - to expand or collapse parts of the site map and click on any link to display the associated part of the site.

There are currently no access keys to access the site map and it is currently unusable without a mouse.

Alphabetical Index

Our alphabetical index is a great way to browse all the content on our site. You can click the letters or numbers at the top of the index to filter it so that only pages starting with the associated letter or number are displayed.

There is currently no access key to access the Alphabetical Index.

Hyperlinks

Unlike most sites, we make every attempt to indicate the type of destination for our hyperlinks by placing small images next to any links that will open your email application or take you to a different website:

  1. Internal Link - This type of link will take you to another page within this site
  2. External Link - This type of link will take you to an external website
  3. Download Link - This type of link will download a file from this site (depending on the file type, eg. images, some browsers will display it on screen)

  5. [Missing Page Link] - This type of link indicates the page is missing from this site

We have made every effort to ensure that all links have a title - should you find any that are misleading or otherwise difficult to understand, please contact us and we will rectify the situation.
