Job Description

Your passion for learning languages and specifically Java libraries, APIs, features, patterns and best practices will come from your hobbyist nature. You'll be dreaming up code and working on open source projects, learning from a desire for betterment rather than the reward of a pay check - although that never hurts!

You must be able to pick up and learn new APIs rapidly, keeping at a usable distance behind the bleeding edge to focus on Getting Things Done.

Your primary role will be to grow from a junior developer, to a senior developer - eventually taking the lead on internal projects, and perhaps more. Your first task will be to assist with the development of an internal licensing and invoice management system using AppFuse backed by JPA / Struts2 / JSP.

You must have a reasonable background in J2EE development, preferably understanding Hibernate & JPA / Spring / WebWork & Struts2 / JSP & Velocity / Lucene. This is on top of the general concepts (EJB, JDBC, JMS, ORM, etc) which you are expected to be able to recite in your sleep.

You will have kept up with the movement of Java since 1.2 through to the new features of Java 5, the enhancements in Java 6 and the prospective language changes being debated for Java 7 (Closures, Fork/Join etc). You will also have Parleys bookmarked, and if that's the first time you've seen the website it'll be at least an hour before you end up finishing reading this page!

Concepts such as Domain Driven Design, Test Driven Development, Service Orientated Architecture, Unit Testing, Continuous Integration, Subversion/Source Control, Agile Development, Extreme Programming should all be known, if not familiar to you - you must know enough about them to be opinionated about their use & misuse.

You must be head-strong and willing to lead from the front, comfortable being part of a team but able to work with autonomy.

Salary

Negotiable depending on skills and experience - the role may either be a junior or senior position depending on your background.
