Environmental Policy
Since forming the company in 2005, Adaptavist have been committed to protecting the environment wherever possible. Read on to find out what we are doing to make our small corner of the world a better place...
All employees are made aware of this policy and their responsibilities for environmental issues and we aim to review our environmental policies and procedures regularly to improve our performance and quality.
We will use policies and procedures that will ensure the conservation of natural resources while minimising any adverse environmental impact from our operations, including, but not limited to, waste reduction and recycling. We will always seek to purchase products that are environmentally friendly, re-usable, recyclable and that do not damage the environment.
The company operates an energy conservation policy to ensure that:
- All non-critical equipment is switched off when not needed
- Energy-efficient electrical equipment will be preferred for purchase
- Consumption of petrol and other fuels for work related purposes is kept to an absolute minimum by making every effort to reduce unnecessary travel
With all staff working from home, we have already noted some key benefits in respect to our environmental policies:
- A significant reduction in travel - a reduction of at least 400 car journeys per year per member of staff!
- A reduction in food packaging - being able to cook proper food in an oven has resulted in us using food products with less packaging (when compared to the microwavable products we used to live on)
- We all work from a single, small room, rather than trying to maintain a large open-plan office space. This has resulted in significantly lower energy consumption for heating, cooling and lighting.
Annual travel reduction greater than the circumference of the Earth:
At the time of writing this article, we have calculated that our cumulative reduction in travel to and from work per year (based on our previous place of work) is some 26,800 miles per annum which equates to some 765 gallons of petrol (by our rough calculations) saved per year. The circumference of the Earth is only 24,900 miles!
We have already achieved a 98% paperless business!
- Apart from occasional team meetings, all our communications are conducted via the Internet - video conferencing, VoIP, Instant Messaging, Email and our online Intranet
- Faxes are received as emails
- Our products and services are all accessed online so there is no need for packaging
- All our documentation is stored and distributed electronically via the Internet
- All of our financial transactions are conducted electronically wherever possible
- We have ensured that our suppliers operate online paperless billing and auditing|
To date, the main source of paper abuse our business has encountered is related to the financial aspects of our business:
- The Inland Rervenue seems determined to use paper wherever possible
- Our bank still seems determined to send us paper-based statements, even though we have full access to that informtion via our online banking
We are working closely with our Accountant to maximise the use of email and digital transmission of accounts and book keeping in order to reduce paper usage.
That being said, we are extremely proud of our achievements to date with regards to our self-imposed environmental policy!
