Following a company merger, the client had a requirement to migrate their project tracking system from Bugzilla to JIRA. JIRA for them was the superior system but one limitation they saw with JIRA was how it dealt with categories. They had previously used a 3-level hierarchy to organise their projects but trials showed this would not work as well in JIRA and would cause the project select widget in the create issue popup/page and other places to be too long. This was a critical issue for adoption of the new system and was preventing them from moving forward with their migration. They were seeking a future-proof solution that would work with updates to JIRA.
Following discussions between Atlassian and the client, Adaptavist were recommended by Atlassian as a Platinum Expert with experience in creating award-winning plugins who could develop a solution for them.
Adaptavist created a plugin that augmented the 'Project' select widget by adding an additional 'Category' select above it. This filters the list of projects to just those in the selected category and also provided the ability to filter by 'All Projects', 'Recent Projects', and 'No Category' when applicable. This enhancement was included in the Create Issue popup, page and Navigator. The plugin was created using Stable APIs and with a comprehensive automated test suite. This future-proofed the plugin as much as possible and provided assurance that any plugin incompatibilities introduced by changes in JIRA updates could be resolved in plenty of time before a system upgrade would be affected.
The solution resolved their critical issue and enabled the client to proceed with their migration and enabled them to keep their existing project structure. This meant they avoided costly project re-structuring changes and risking adoption of their new system. They can also upgrade with confidence that this customisation will continue to work for them in to the future.
